One of the most-anticipated upcoming pan-India films this year is Kantara Chapter: 1, which is a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. After the nationwide success of the first instalment, the makers have canned Kantara Chapter: 1 on a huge scale with a massive budget and a stellar star cast. It is slated for a worldwide release on October 2.
For the last few days, it is being widely reported in the media that the makers of Kantara Chapter: 1 are demanding around ₹100 crores for the Telugu rights. People on social media have divided opinions on this. A section of people call it a risky move, while others wrote it off as a PR hype tactic.
Even though the first part was a huge blockbuster, investing Rs. 100 crores for a dubbed film with no Telugu star or prominent Telugu actor would be a high risk for any Telugu banner.
For example, the rights of the recent film Coolie, which had Superstar Rajinikanth, directed by star filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring big Telugu hero Nagarjuna, were sold for around Rs. 50 crores. Coolie was driven by huge hype, and that film’s rights were selling for Rs. 50 crores and the rights of Kantara, with relatively smaller stars, selling for Rs. 100 crores seems a bit exaggerated.
So, it is being speculated on social media that these reports are misleading and might be a PR strategy to build hype for the film ahead of its release.
