South Indian films have increasingly made a mark across India, especially when they get strong support in the Hindi-speaking regions. Franchises like Baahubali, KGF, and Pushpa have shown that a pan-India hit needs both South and North audiences to make big box office numbers.

Kantara Chapter 1 has done well globally, collecting over ₹300 crore during its four-day extended weekend. However, the response from North India has been limited, and the film has not received the same level of support there.

For comparison, the first installments of KGF and Pushpa started modestly in the North but eventually grew. KGF Part 1 earned ₹45 crore nett in its full Hindi run, while KGF Part 2 collected ₹53 crore nett on its first day alone. Pushpa 1 earned close to ₹110 crore nett in Hindi, and Pushpa 2 surpassed that total in just two days.

Kantara Chapter 1, in contrast, earned around ₹80 crore nett in its full Hindi run. During its four-day extended weekend, it made roughly ₹70 crore nett in the North, suggesting it may need a fifth day to match the first installment’s total. Despite positive word of mouth, the film is not performing as strongly in Hindi regions as expected.

Given early trends, it may be difficult for Kantara Chapter 1 to cross ₹200 crore nett in North India. While Bahubali 2, KGF 2, and Pushpa 2 set very high benchmarks with ₹500 crore, ₹450 crore, and ₹800 crore nett respectively from Hindi versions, Kantara’s strength remains largely in the South.

The film stars Rishab Shetty, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah. It is directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films.
