With several state elections coming up soon, including the crucial Tamil Nadu assembly polls, the NDA has set its eyes firmly on the southern state. For years, the BJP-led alliance has struggled to make inroads in Tamil Nadu. Now, in what is being seen as a calculated political move, the NDA has chosen a Tamil leader, C.P. Radhakrishnan, as its candidate for the post of Vice President of India. The decision was finalized at a meeting held on Sunday night.
Radhakrishnan is a seasoned politician who earlier served as a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore. He is currently the Governor of Maharashtra and has also previously held charge as Governor of Telangana and Jharkhand. Known for his understanding of constitutional affairs, he enjoys a respectable image in political circles. With NDA’s numbers in its favor, his election as Vice President is almost certain, analysts say, despite the INDIA bloc’s attempts to field a candidate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have been keeping a close watch on Tamil Nadu politics for years. Determined to gain ground in the state, they are using every possible opportunity to build influence. Though results so far have been mixed, the BJP leadership continues to stay focused on the state. Political observers believe that choosing a Tamil leader for the Vice President post is not just about the position itself, but also a strategic step to send a strong message ahead of Tamil Nadu’s assembly elections early next year.
