Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is ensuring all-round development of the state. He is focusing not only on establishment of industries and development of ports and IT sector but also on sustainable practices and cleanliness in the state.
Andhra Pradesh has taken up a mission to eliminate over 1.15 crore metric tonne of legacy waste by the end of this year. The initiative would also help in turning the reclaimed land into productive use through a circular economy model.
Municipal & Urban Development (MAUD) principal secretary S. Suresh Kumar announced that 85.90 lakh metric tonne of old waste dumps would be cleared by October 2, 2025, along with an additional 30 lakh metric tonne by December 2025. Speaking at the Collectors’ Conference, he said that the soil recovered from the dumps would be processed into compost, while the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) will be supplied to cement factories.
Reminding that the state has won national recognition in Swachh Survekshan 2024, he said AP is committed to adopting the circular economy model to promote environmental protection, optimal land use, and job creation.
At the Collectors’ Conference, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the progress of Swachh Andhra Corporation, Panchayati Raj & Rural Development, Pollution Control Board, MAUD, and the forest department under the theme “Swachh Andhra, Swachh Bharat & Circular Economy.” Naidu stressed the government’s commitment to cleanliness, sustainability, and resource efficiency.
Apart from legacy waste clearance, Waste-to-Energy projects are also being increased in number in the state. Two plants are operating in Visakhapatnam and Guntur while new projects are planned in Rajahmundry, Kurnool, Nellore, Kadapa, Vijayawada and Tirupati. These plants are expected to be fully functional by 2027.
At the same time, the government is also strengthening integrated waste management through 72 ISWM clusters, supported by 417 Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in rural areas and 108 urban projects. In Visakhapatnam and Tirupati, the government is reviving construction and demolition waste plants. Poultry waste management initiatives are also being planned. Over 142 sewage treatment plants (STPs) are being planned on 199 acres to ensure treated water is reused safely.
On August 15, 2025, the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat was declared Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Free. All the collectorates and government offices have been directed to achieve the SUP-free status by December this year.
