Thalapathy Vijay’s public rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, ended in a tragedy as a massive stampede claimed 33 lives, including women and children, while many others were left injured. Officials confirmed that the venue had permission for only 10,000 attendees, but nearly two lakh people turned up, leading to the chaos.

Initially, when Vijay was approached by Tamil media at Trichy airport for his reaction, he chose not to speak and quietly proceeded inside. Reports suggested that he might have wanted to respond with clarity rather than making an immediate statement.

Later, Vijay finally broke his silence with an emotional tweet. He wrote, “My heart is broken. I am devastated with grief. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who are injured.”

However, Vijay also faced criticism for not visiting the injured victims at the Karur hospital and instead traveling directly to Chennai after the incident.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and grief over the tragic event, offering condolences to the bereaved families and wishing for the quick recovery of the injured. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin also conveyed his sorrow and directed officials to provide the best possible medical care free of cost. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family and ₹1 lakh for those seriously injured. Stalin will personally visit Karur tomorrow to meet the victims and their families.
