The death toll in the heartwrenching stampede that occurred during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Thalapathy Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has touched 39. As per the official reports published by the government authorities, as many as 60 people are undergoing treatment for injuries they have sustained during the unfortunate tragedy.

An utterly heartbroken Vijay, who had to abruptly cancel his roadshow following the incident, took to his X last night and expressed unbearable, indescribable pain over the tragedy. On Sunday morning, Vijay took to X once again and announced a generous compensation of Rs 20 lakhs each for the family members of the deceased and Rs 2 lakhs each for the family members of the injured.

Vijay said that his heart and mind are overwhelmed with profound heaviness thinking about what happened in Karur yesterday. “I am at a loss for words to express the pain my heart endures. My eyes and mind are clouded with sorrow. The loss of our loved ones is unbearable. Yet, as a member of your family, I intend to provide Rs 20 lakh to each family that has lost a loved one and Rs 2 lakh to those who are injured and receiving treatment,” said the actor-turned-politician.

Vijay went on to say that this amount is not significant in the face of such a tragic loss. “Still, at this moment, it is my duty as one who belongs to your family to stand by you, my dear ones, with a heavy heart. I also assure you that our Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will steadfastly provide all necessary support to our loved ones under treatment,” he added.

Meanwhile, there has been a growing dissent against Vijay on the internet from the sympathisers of the opposition parties and anti-fans. Social media has been flooded with non-stop demands to book Vijay for criminal negligence, while some went on to urge Vijay to next foray into politics. On the other hand, security has been beefed up at Vijay’s residence in Chennai.
