The NDA government of Andhra Pradesh led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is making use of every opportunity to get grants from the centre to fix some of the long standing coastline issues which mandatorily require the intervention of National Disaster Management Authority.
It is a known fact that Andhra Pradesh boasts a massive coastline of 974 Kms. But, nearly 290 Kms of this area is affected by soil erosion and impacted the livelihoods of the fisherman community. Out of this, 30 Kms stretch of coastline belongs to Vishakapatnam city.
Now, as per Times of India report, the NDA has approved Rs. 222 Crores package for coastal erosion mitigation project proposed by the Vishakapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority. This will be a big boost towards arriving at a permanent solution for the perennial battle against coastal erosion.
Tourist spots like RK Beach and Rushikonda have suffered repeated damages due to this natural phenomenon as tides wash away the embankments slowly every day. The approval is a result of repeated pursuance from the state government to develop a comprehensive shoreline management plan for Vizag.
The proposal was first initiated after CM Naidu officials to send proposals to the Centre after his review meeting last year. Vizag was among 11 cities which submitted proposals and the Centre has finally approved the project.
Earlier this year, the central government approved the Coastal Protection Project worth 323 crores under which a seawall will be built across a single village to check soil erosion of Uppada coast in Kakinada. This will prevent soil erosion of the coastline which has seriously affected the livelihoods of the fisherman community in the coastal villages of Uppada. Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan also highlighted the sensitive issue during his visit to Uppada and brought to the notice of the Centre.
As the TDP-Janasena coalition is a key ally of the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the proposals of the state government are getting approvals from the Centre one by one for so many such sensitive problems. This is the power of Double Engine Sarkaar as quoted by Chandrababu in several meetings.
