Amid raising trade tensions and strained diplomatic relations between the two countries, US President Donald Trump has reportedly invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the peace summit in Egypt’s Sharm-el Sheik which is likely to be the centre stage that will end the ongoing war in the Gaza strip.
The summit will be held on October 13th and it appears to be a last minute invitation extended by Trump and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The so-called peace summit will witness an agreement between Israel and Hamas to end the war at the Gaza strip. The summit comes in the light of Trump’s recent efforts to bring about truce between the two belligerent countries.
However, there is no update on whether the Indian government will accept Trump’s invitation and the chances for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance appear bleak as of now. Neither the PMO or Narendra Modi himself made anything official about this high-profile invitation.
The summit will assume significance if Modi accepts the invitation and attends it because this will his first confrontation with Donald Trump after a while and provides an opportunity to reconcile the cold trade relations with the US amid the ongoing tariff war. The meeting also gives a chance for India to demonstrate its soft stand on the Palestinian cause and make its presence in the Middle East. Moreover, it will boost the bilateral ties with Egypt as well.
A couple of days ago Modi said through his post on X that he spoke to Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan and reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations.
