The opulent Rushikonda Palace in Vishakapatnam, constructed with government exchequer at the behest of the then Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to house his residence, has turned into a White Elephant for the current regime led by Chandrababu Naidu. Even after 16 months since coming to power, Naidu’s government is unable to figure out the exact purpose for which the palatial building could be used.

After dilly dallying for several months, the government has finally decided to seek public opinions for effective and best utilisation of the buildings and the adjoining 9 acres of land. The tourism department of Andhra Pradesh has invited valuable and tourism oriented suggestions from the people of the state for lucrative usage of the palace so that the wasteful expenditure splurged on the premier property could be recouped.

Suggestions are invited via e-mail within seven days and also a consultation meeting has been scheduled with national and international operators in Vijayawada to take different views before finalizing an ideal plan to repurpose these buildings.

Jagan’s government spent a staggering 450 Crores and flouted several ecological norms to build this imposing structure only to accommodate his residence and lead all official duties from there if he retains power for the second term.

Due to change in guard, the abuse of power has been exposed and the future of the palace shrouded in uncertainty. Even though both CM Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan visited the palace after coming to power, there are unable to come with a viable solution that will be benefit the government. A cabinet sub committee has also been formed to decide the future of the palace.

With no concrete solution available so far, the government has decided to put the fate of the building in the hands of the public. It remains to be seen if there will be some headway towards modifying or using the buildings it in a ideal manner.
